Goal:

‘To promote dialogue and action for the celebration of inclusivity and diversity especially through language.”

The New Zealand Government in its legislation and initiatives has been extremely responsive to the issue of tolerance of, and respect for, religious and cultural difference and its implications for peace and security regionally and internationally. The National Commission can contribute to these efforts by continuing to promote interfaith and intercultural understanding.

A special focus in 2008, the United Nations International Year of Languages, was on language diversity. UNESCO was the lead agency in this year of activities.

The National Commission will encourage youth involvement in activities that promote cultural diversity by continuing to work with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) and the Ministry of Youth Development (MYD).

The National Commission will also continue to support dialogue on the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications for all New Zealanders.  Within the framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) special attention will be paid to the rights of people with disabilities.
